Macif Home Protection Formula: Coverage, Benefits, and Limitations to Know

A water damage incident on a Sunday evening, a burglary during the holidays, a storm that tears off tiles: you can’t choose when disaster strikes. The protective formula from Macif for home insurance positions itself as the most comprehensive contract in the mutual’s catalog, above the economic formula. It remains to be seen whether this expanded coverage lives up to its promises in the face of the concrete situations that policyholders experience.

Enhanced duty of advice: what Macif must verify after subscription

Since law no. 2023-973 known as the “Green Industry” law, a long-term duty of advice is imposed on all non-life insurance distributors, effective from October 24, 2024. Macif can no longer be satisfied with initial advice at the signing of the home insurance contract.

In practical terms, any significant change in the home triggers an obligation for reassessment: an increase in personal property coverage after a major purchase, the addition of an outbuilding, or moving into shared accommodation. Decree no. 2024-551 of June 18, 2024, specifies that the insurer must also inquire about the policyholder’s preferences regarding sustainability.

For a member with a Macif protective home formula, this means that one can require regular updates on the adequacy between the subscribed guarantees and the actual situation of the household. If Macif does not offer this update during a significant event, it incurs liability.

Coverage included in the Macif protective formula: the real scope

The protective formula automatically includes guarantees that other insurers charge as options. Among the coverages that distinguish it from the economic formula are vacation coverage (protection of temporary housing during holidays) and extended assistance.

The base guarantees cover the usual risks:

  • Water damage, fire, explosion, storm, and natural disasters, covering damages to the structure and personal property according to the contract limits
  • Personal liability, which applies when a household member causes damage to a third party, even outside the home
  • Theft and vandalism, with compensation for personal property and valuable items within contractual limits
  • Extended glass breakage coverage for vitroceramic plates and solar panels based on feedback from policyholders

The protective formula offers about fifteen complementary options, compared to only four for the economic formula. One can add electrical damage coverage, enhanced legal protection, or insurance for leisure equipment.

Deductibles and limits: the gray areas to watch

Like any home insurance contract, the protective formula applies deductibles per claim. The amount varies depending on the nature of the damage. In the case of moderate water damage, the deductible can absorb a significant portion of the compensation, making claims less appealing for minor incidents.

The compensation limits for personal property deserve careful verification. If the actual value of the contents of the home exceeds the declared capital, the compensation will be reduced proportionally. It is recommended to reassess this capital annually, especially since the enhanced duty of advice now requires Macif to support this process.

Termination of the Macif home insurance contract: concrete levers

Changing home insurers is simpler than one might think. Since the Hamon law, any home insurance contract over a year old can be terminated at any time, without fees or penalties. The new insurer handles the formalities with Macif.

For members who subscribed to or manage their protective formula online, termination in three clicks has been mandatory since June 1, 2023. This obligation, based on Article L113-14 II of the Insurance Code and Decree no. 2023-182, requires Macif to provide a termination button accessible directly from the client area.

When termination makes sense

Terminating the protective formula is not always justified. If the price seems high, one should first check that the competing contract offers an equivalent scope of guarantees. Some insurers advertise low prices but exclude vacation coverage, limit personal liability, or impose heavier deductibles.

Feedback varies on this point: long-term members report annual premium increases that erode the initial advantage, while others benefit from loyalty discounts. Comparing quotes with identical guarantees remains the only reliable method.

Shared accommodation and atypical housing: the blind spots of the protective formula

Shared accommodation poses a recurring problem in home insurance. With the protective formula, each roommate must check whether they are covered by the same contract or if they need to subscribe separately. A single contract in the name of the main tenant does not automatically protect the other occupants in terms of personal liability.

For atypical housing (tiny houses, modular habitats, container extensions), coverage depends on the declaration made at subscription. The expanded RE2020 standard puts pressure on the insurance of these unconventional homes, with potentially higher premiums and specific exclusions to read in the special conditions of the contract.

Non-occupying owner: a separate contract

The protective formula targets the primary residence occupied by the member. An owner renting out their property needs a non-occupying owner (PNO) contract, offered separately by Macif. Confusing the two exposes one to a denial of compensation in the event of a claim on a rental property.

The choice between the economic formula and the protective formula depends on the contents of the home, family configuration, and risk tolerance. A basic furnished studio does not always justify the extra cost of the protective formula. A family apartment with valuable furniture and electronic equipment makes the expanded coverage significantly more relevant.
